Video: .mp4 (1280x720, 30 fps(r)) | Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, 2ch | Size: 828 MB

Become comfortable with Linux Command Line: navigate the file system, copy, move, view and edit files and use pipelines.

What you'll learn

Operate Linux Command Line Interface, or Shell
Perform common file operations: create, view and modify files, change file permissions
Learn common commands used in pipelines to get a more controlled output

Requirements

Computer/laptop running Linux, e.g. Ubuntu, to practice. A Linux running on a virtual machine, e.g. VirtualBox, would also work
Passion to dig deeper into the Linux operating system and its file system

Description

This course is a concise crash-course into Linux Shell. Although it is short, it introduces you to a number of commands to interact with files and directories, and build a chain of commands into pipelines: ls, cp, chmod, grep, find, less, head and even more. Whether you are in an urgent need to get familiar with common shell commands, or want to take your time and discover command line interface, this course will help you to get started.

What is Command Line Interface (CLI, or just Shell)? Wikipedia says, it is "a means of interacting with a computer program where the user (or client) issues commands to the program in the form of successive lines of text (command lines). A program which handles the interface is called a command language interpreter or shell (computing)". Command Line gives you a great control over functions of the operating system, as well as the hardware of your computer, such as a network or a sound card. Many end user applications have a user interface that simplifies user experience, and if you want a better flexibility, the Command Line gives you this option.

Command Line Interface is the core of the operating system, it gives you access to the lowest level of interactions with it. This course will focus on the Linux/Unix interface but most of the commands in the course are also available in MacOS.

Important note! If the course is too fast or too slow, you can change the speed of the video up to your liking. Click at the bottom of the video next to the "Play" button or at the top if you are on mobile.

This is what students are saying about this course:

"It's a really basic course, but it's good enough to give you and idea about the things that you'll need to learn later on about this subject" - Elia Pari, Udemy Student

"... This is not only a great refresher (I've been using Linux as a basic user for 20 years), but it also is teaching me many simple things that I don't know or never learned (...) like using the center mouse button for pasting, using 'control r' to go thru command history, and many other things. All very useful." - Gregg Powell, Udemy Student

"Very Useful Commands and Shortcuts in time saving manners, Thank You." - Vipin Kumar, Udemy Student

"An excellent introduction to Linux command line. The course approach gets you right into using the commands immediately. Definitely a good starting point for beginners." - August Schau, Udemy Student

Who this course is for:

Beginner Linux users who are curious about the operating system and its Command Line Interface
Developers who want to boost their productivity by doing part of their work in the Command Line
Power users who used CLI in other operating systems (such as Windows) and want to be able to do similar operations in Linux
Windows users who want to learn the new operating system and need to start with basics of command line
Enthusiasts and job seekers who want to explore tools used by professional developers and administrators and want to start with the basics
